Invoice Payment Terms Explained

Payment terms define when the customer must pay. Net 30, early-payment discounts, late fees and milestones are far more effective than 'please pay soon'.

Common terms

Net 30 means payment within 30 days of the invoice date; 2/10 Net 30 gives 2 percent off if paid within 10 days, otherwise full in 30.

State the late-fee rate or flat amount and check local caps.

Milestones

Large projects use 30/40/30 or 50/50 milestones, each with a deliverable and due date.

Invoice deposits, acceptance and final payment separately to avoid a blurry balance.

FAQ

When does Net 30 start?

Usually from the invoice date; you can use delivery or acceptance, but state it.

Are late fees legal?

Often yes, with caps and disclosure rules; cross-border contracts depend on governing law.
